One of Z3’s core messages is about seizing our unprecedented moment in Jewish history - one in which we have a strong homeland and a thriving diaspora. The famous quip “They tried to kill us. They failed. Let’s eat!” humorously summarizes Jewish Holidays, but like any good joke, it is funny because there is a kernel of truth in it. Indeed, the sense of near catastrophe is central to our collective consciousness. As recent as 2020, studies showed that 75% of American Jewry and 87% of Israelis rank the memory of the Holocaust as the most important element of their identity. In 2022, as we celebrate Israel’s 75th year of Independence, our focus in the conference was to ask if it is time to reevaluate how we prioritize elements of our identity.
